01 · The sports problem

The most over-sold
lighting job there is.

Sports lighting is where clients get talked into the most expensive spec they'll never use. A community club gets quoted broadcast-grade lux because the margin is fatter, then carries the capex and the running cost of TV lighting on a field no camera will ever visit. The honest job is matching the lighting class to the venue's real use: recreational, training, club competition, or genuine broadcast, and then nailing the things that actually matter at any level: uniformity across the whole playing surface (a dark corner is where the injury happens), glare control so players aren't blinded looking up for a high ball, and flicker-free drivers if there's any chance of slow-motion capture. We tell you which class you need. Then we light it properly.

Sports lux scales with the level of play and whether cameras are present, horizontal lux (Eh) for play, vertical lux (Ev) for broadcast. Typical design targets below, aligned to recognised sports-lighting classes and the SANS 10114 framework. We confirm against the governing body's requirement for your code and venue.

Lux figures are typical design targets for guidance, aligned to recognised sports-lighting classes and the SANS 10114 framework. Broadcast and competition venues are confirmed against the relevant governing-body / federation requirement for the code of sport. Padel has a specific lighting brief, and it isn't stadium lux. The light has to be even across the whole court so there are no dark patches where the ball disappears, glare-controlled so players aren't blinded looking up for a lob, free of harsh shadows on the glazed walls the game is played off, and flicker-free for the phone clips members love to post.
