01 · The healthcare problem

One ceiling,
many clinical jobs.

A hospital ceiling does more clinical work than almost any other building. The same ward needs gentle, low-glare ambient light so a patient can rest, a brighter reading layer they can switch on, and examination-grade light at the bed-head when a clinician needs to assess, all without dazzling someone lying flat on their back staring at the ceiling. Consulting and treatment rooms need colour rendering good enough to judge skin tone and tissue honestly (a low-CRI fitting can literally mask a clinical sign). And increasingly, infection control, easy-clean fittings and circadian schemes that aid recovery are part of the brief. Generic office lighting fails all of this. We design each clinical space to its actual function, and where surgical or examination equipment shares the ceiling, we coordinate with our Medical Solutions silo so it all works together.

Clinical lux is layered and task-specific, with high colour fidelity throughout and glare control critical for supine patients. Typical maintained-illuminance design targets below, aligned to the SANS 10114-1 framework and healthcare guidance. Specialist surgical and examination luminaires are specified through our Medical Solutions silo.

05 · Why Lamphouse

Most lighting suppliers can do a corridor but not a theatre, or sell you a surgical light with no one to design the ward around it. Lamphouse runs both, a general LED Solutions team and a specialist Medical Solutions / Maqcare silo, so a hospital gets one accountable group from the corridor to the operating table.

"The clinicians got the examination light they needed at the bed-head, and the patients stopped being dazzled by a ceiling full of bare panels."

A typical ward upgrade reveals the core healthcare lighting problem: a single uniform layer trying to do three jobs. The old scheme dazzled supine patients, gave them no controllable reading light, and left clinicians without examination-grade light where they actually needed it, at the bed.

Our designer rebuilt the ward in layers: a soft, glare-controlled ambient for rest, a patient-switchable reading light, and a high-CRI examination layer at the bed-head that clinicians bring up only when assessing. A dimmed night-watch level supports sleep without leaving the ward dark. Colour rendering was specified high enough to judge skin tone honestly. Where the facility's theatres and exam rooms needed specialist kit, that was handled through our Medical Solutions silo, one group, one coordinated result.
