Surgical lighting is not industrial LED with a clean cover. The surgeon needs colour rendering to read tissue, shadow suppression because hands occlude the field, and, critically, light that never blinds across a long procedure. RIMSA solved the last problem outright: its Unica series uses patented double-reflection optics to remove glare entirely. Three clinical settings cover almost every hospital brief, and for major surgery the lead recommendation is RIMSA Unica, the zero-glare upgrade to the Pentaled theatre lights SA hospitals already run. Lamp replacement, dental and UV disinfection sit with our Specialised Lamps silo.

Unica, the no-glare upgrade

For every major operating theatre we lead with Unica. It is the direct upgrade to the established Pentaled 63N / 30N: same RIMSA pedigree, but patented 2R double reflection adds complete glare elimination and a light-emitting surface that matches the full reflector, at 160 000 lux, camera-ready as standard. Pentaled remains available where it's already specified.

03 · The technology

Why Unica, and not
just another LED dome.

A scialytic, "shadowless": lamp lives or dies on four things: how much usable light it puts on the field, how faithfully colour reads, how it manages shadow, and whether it tires the surgeon. RIMSA's indirect optics and patented 2R double reflection answer all four. This is the substance behind the headline, and the reason Unica leads our theatre recommendations.

The full reflector becomes the light source

LEDs sit on two circumferences at the edge of two mirror modules; the beams reflect twice and merge. The light-emitting surface matches the entire cupola, versus ~60% for direct LED. A larger emitting surface is what dilutes shadow when a hand crosses the field.

02 · Glare elimination

No blinding, across a long case

At up to 160 000 lux, glare is a genuine clinical hazard. A compensation ring of lower-intensity light surrounds the focus, letting the eye adapt gradually between the surgical field and its surround. The Unica series removes the sensation of glare completely.

Light deep into the cavity

A dedicated central LED module casts deep, directional light so the surgeon keeps true three-dimensional perception when operating inside cavities, where flat, single-plane illumination fails.

"We replaced four major theatre lights and one minor across one weekend. Theatres ran Monday morning on schedule. That's the only acceptable outcome."

A private hospital group refurbishing its theatre block needed to replace ageing surgical lights with current-generation LED arrays, across five theatres, with zero downtime to the elective schedule. The brief was logistical as much as clinical: install over a single Saturday-Sunday window, with full commissioning Monday morning.

We pre-staged the new RIMSA ceiling mounts, ran electrical isolation checks the week before, removed the legacy units Saturday morning and had the new arrays mounted, commissioned and signed off by the clinical engineer by Sunday afternoon. Backup units were on-site in case any commissioning issue surfaced. Monday's first case ran on time.
