01 · The office problem

Lighting people
actually sit under.

Office lighting is judged by the people who live under it for eight hours a day, and they notice when it's wrong, even if they can't name why. Too much glare and the monitors bounce; too cool and flat and the room feels like a call centre; no daylight linking and you're burning full power at 2pm next to a wall of windows. A good office scheme balances three things most quotes ignore: glare control tuned to screens (UGR<19), a colour temperature that suits the work and the time of day, and controls that harvest the considerable daylight a South African building gets for free. Get those right and you cut energy and the space feels better to be in.

An office is judged by the people who spend their day in it: whether they can focus, whether the space feels good to walk into, whether it flatters the brand to a visitor. So we design for the experience of each space first: comfort at the desk, calm in the meeting room, a confident first impression at reception. The screen-friendly glare control, the daylight that does half the work for free, the controls that quietly trim the bill, all of it serves the experience rather than sitting on top of it. "The complaints about glare on the screens stopped overnight, and finance liked the lighting bill even more."

A typical office refurb swaps tired recessed fluorescents for designed LED panels and linears. The old scheme was uniform, over-lit and glaring straight into monitors; staff had taped over fittings and brought in desk lamps, a sign the ceiling was working against them.

Our designer reset the layout to a screen-safe glare class, dropped the working-plane lux to a comfortable level, and added daylight-linked dimming on the window rows plus presence control on the meeting rooms and circulation. Energy fell because the building stopped lighting empty space at full power next to a wall of glass; comfort rose because the glare was gone.
